cat-scorpion

A friend of mine who is living in a rural farm house is stumbling upon with scorpions daily. So he often asked me if getting a cat will help. There is folklore that cats deter scorpions by eating them. I read that cats are immune to scorpion stings in a blog also. It is not so! The truth is cats prefer to avoid scorpion rather than encountering with them.

If your cat is stung by a scorpion, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will die. Not all scorpion stings are lethal. Scorpion stings were 6th most common bite or sting, behind bee stings, spider bites, tick bites, wasp stings, and ant bites. Don’t assume that the scorpion sting treatment for humans is the same for your cat. Consult your veterinarian if symptoms appear serious.

Managing Allergies to Cat’s Body

October 06, 2012 :: Posted by - kittyluver :: Category - Diseases, Health

You may love to have a cat as pet at home. But you may not be able to do so because of your cat allergy issue. Here is good news. The cats and the people who are allergic to it can live together without any hassle.

The allergic reactions to the cat are caused by the protein secretions of the skin of the cat in most cases. The cat’s saliva is the other allergens. These proteins attach themselves to the skin and the hair of the cat and are released in to the environment slowly.

Few are of the opinion that they soon develop immunity to counter cat allergy. This is certainly possible, but one should never depend on this theory so much. The reason is that in some cases the allergic reaction may get worse will repeat exposure.

If you are prone for cat allergy and yet love to have a cat at home, then try for a cat breed with short hair. These breeds will release less hair than the long haired cat breeds. Pure breeds like Devon and Cornish rex can be considered. These breeds do not have few layers of hairs that are commonly seen in other breeds and the allergic reaction may be less. The other breed that one can look for is sphinx which is more or less hairless and these cats love the pet owners very much.

If you have a cat at home follow little suggestion to get away from the cat allergy. The cat’s bed should be washed very frequently. Use fewer carpets in the house as they may harbour more allergens. Better to limit upholstered furniture pieces as much as possible. The cat should never be permitted to allergic person’s bed room. The smooth surfaces of the house should be washed frequently.

CATS AND CHILDREN

September 26, 2012 :: Posted by - kittyluver :: Category - General

The children just love the company of cats. If more than one person is providing the attention and care, the cats will enjoy the same very much. The children can play safely with cat than any other pet. The cat and the children should know to respect each other’s desire and need. The elderly person should always be around while the children play with the cat and the children should never be left alone with the cat.

The kids may accidentally hurt the cat. The cat will get frightened by this and may attack the child in return. The children who have cat at their home should be taught some basic handling technique. The cat should be lifted in such a way that one hand should rest with the chest while the other should rest at hind limbs. The cat may also be allowed to perch with her fore legs on to your shoulder, but her back leg should be supported with your hand or arm. One should let the cat go, if it struggles or tries to get away.

If the cat’s ear is flat and the tail is lashing, then the cat should be left alone as it is not in good mood. One should never touch the stomach of the cat, as the cat may get frightened and may even bite the person. Appropriate toys should be used while playing with the cat. Teasing the cat with your hand is not a good idea as you mat get hurt in the process. The cat should be left alone, if it is sleeping, using the litter box or eating. In most houses the elders expect the children to do the feeding, watering and practicing the litter box usage which is not a good idea. If the children do not do proper job, the sufferer in nothing but the cat. It is better for the elders to do the chores of the cat.

How to control worms in your cat naturally?

August 20, 2012 :: Posted by - kittyluver :: Category - Diseases

Intestinal worms are common in all creatures which includes human. These worms feed on the nutrients that are for the host and deprive the host from those vital nutrients there by disturbing the health of the host. These intestinal worms should be kept under control else they play havoc. As long as these parasites are kept at minimal number, there is no issue. Once the numbers increase then the disease symptoms are bound to appear.

Strangely some animals will appear normal with heavy load of worms while many other will show their discomfort soon. The symptoms of worm infestation vary from one animal to the other. The most common symptoms are impaired assimilation of nutrients, disturbance of digestive systems, vomiting, frequent eating of grass, rubbing the anus to the ground, decreased appetite, increased appetite, immune dysfunction, heart problems, respiratory problems, etc.

There are so many medications available for treating the worm infestation. But most of these commercial preparations are very harsh and hence if used for long time, they are harmful to the body parts. These commercial preparations can damage the lining of the digestive system and can lead to toxicity. The young puppies and kittens that are under 6 month of age should never be treated with these harsh commercial medications for deworming.

Adopting preventive measures for warms is the best alternative. These parasites feed on the waste products that are left behind in the intestine. If the digestive system is kept clean then there will not be anything for these parasites to feed on. The animals that are provided with processed food are likely to have more worm burden than those animals that are fed with raw, fresh foods. The reason is very simple the animals that are fed with natural foods are healthier than those are fed with canned foods. The processed food and the canned foods build up more toxins in the system there by paving way for the multiplication of the worms by feeding on those waste toxin materials.

It is better to go in for natural dewormer than the commercial dewormer. The natural products used for deworming do not pose any adverse health issues to the host. Full moon time is the best time form deworming the cats. During this period the cat will be very active thus the efficacy of the medication is much improved.

Heart worms are very dangerous and can kill the cat instantly once their number increases by choking the heart. The parasites are transmitted to the cats mostly by mosquitoes. Heart worm infestation can be seen in cats that are only 2 months old. If the worms mature in the heart, they can affect the function of the heart thereby killing the cat. The cats infested with heart worm may show the following symptoms. They are vomiting, lethargy, impaired blood flow to the organs, loss of appetite, weight loss, digestive disorders, low vitality etc. the heart worm can be diagnosed by blood test . It is better to go in for professional heal to counter worm infestation by natural way.

Feeding cat with raw food – Secrets Exposed

June 28, 2012 :: Posted by - kittyluver :: Category - feeding

Some of the cat owners feeding cat’s raw food like meaty poultry bone to chunks of meat. Feeding cats raw food like meaty poultry bone will let them tear the food off, smashing the bone and eating little bit bone as well as cartilage.

I have once searched the net for getting info about feeding cat raw food. I came across a video that shows how a cat easily dealing with large chunks of various types of meat.

So, feeding cat’s raw food is advisable for the cat owners….

Once you weaned your kitten, you should start with raw food by feeding them with raw chicken. You can get good quality chicken relatively cheaper. You can provide chicken drumstick, raw wing, and thigh. The young kitties will drag it around and gnaw on the raw food you have provided thinking that they were prey.

If you want to strengthen and clean the teeth and gums of your kitten, you can provide them chicken necks as it is being soft for them to chew. The chicken necks will provide enough calcium to the cats that feed on them.

As bottom line, I would like to conclude that NEVER FEED YOUR CATS WITH COOKED BONE. Cooked bones of any kind will get hardened and will seriously cause digestive disorders due to improper digestion of the same. So feeding your cat with raw food will help you to get hale and healthy kitties.

What cats signal with their tails?

June 19, 2012 :: Posted by - kittyluver :: Category - Behavior, Uncategorized

The cats are lovely and cute looking animals. They have expansive tail. The cats can communicate very well with the help of the tail.  The cat can not use their tail to write the English alphabets but they can definitely say a lot of things. The tail of cat does more than providing balance and uses the same as hand to shoo away the insects. The tail of the cat can of course signal their more very clearly. Arden Moore is the author of the book named cat behaviour answer book [storey, 2007]. There are few inputs in the book that help one to understand the message communicated by the tail of the cat. Let us discuss about it here.

Hoisted high

If you find a cat moving about in his territory with the tail held high in the air, then you can very well understand that the cat is very confident and content. The cat uses their tail to communicate to others that it is happy and in friendly mood by hoisting the tail like flagpole. The cat usually gets to this position while approaching a person. If the top portion of the tail twitches as the cast comes near you then the message is clear, the cat loves you very much.

Question mark

You can also find the tail of the cat bent like a question mark. This means that the cat is in playful mood. This is the right time for the pet owner to engage the cat in play session for ten to fifteen minutes.

Flying low

If the tail of the cat is found straight down lying parallel to the legs, then one has to be very careful as the cat is in aggressive mood. But the fact is there are exceptions to this rule. The breeds such as exotics, persions, and Scottish folds tend to keep their tail lower even in the normal circumstances.

Tucked away

You can find the cat with its tail tucked beneath the body. This is a very clear signal of fear and submission. There is something that has made the cat nervous. One can be very sure about it. It is the duty of the pet owner to protect the cat from the danger near by.

Puffed up

The puffed up cat tail indicates that the cat is severely frightened or agitated. The cat is trying to look bigger than the normal size in order to protect itself from the approaching danger=

Whipping

You may notice the cat whipping its tail back and forth rapidly. This means the cat is in both fear and aggression. This way the cat is trying to communicate “stay away” to the other animal

Swishing

If the cat is focussed on an object, then it swishes the tail slowly side by side.  The cat normally swishes its tail while it is ready to pounce on the real mice or toy mice. This type of tail position is a part of cat’s predatory position.

Twitching

Twitching the tail is nothing but a sign of excitement or curiosity. It is better not to disturb the cat at this time

Cat to cat

The tail wrapped around the other cat clearly indicates that both the cats are real pals. This position conveys their friendship.

Night Vision in Cats

May 12, 2012 :: Posted by - kittyluver :: Category - Health

Many are not aware that the cats can see very clearly at night. This capacity is very useful for the cats for their nocturnal hunting habit. The cats will not be able to see thing clearly at complete darkness but these lovely creatures can see things clearly in very low light.

There are so many special anatomical features present in the eye of the cat which is responsible for the night vision in cats. The pupils of the cat are elliptical in shape and are oriented vertically. The elliptical pupils can open very wide than the round pupils which are present in human beings. As the elliptical pupils open wider, more light passes in, there by aiding the cat to see the things clearly even in low light.

There is yet another special anatomical feature present in the eye of the cat which is none other than a membrane called tapetum lucidum.  This special membrane is designed in such a way that the light that enters the eye is reflected back so that the retina gets more light.  The cat’s eye will flash at night, many could have witnessed this. The reason for the flash noticed is nothing but the work of the special membrane tapetum lucidum.

The cat’s retina is also specially designed with more rods and cones and as the result the cat can see very well even at low light. Rods are very effective in absorbing the lights than the cones. The cones are primarily responsible for absorbing the colour. The colour vision is very much limited in cats than human beings and the cones are present in less numbers in cats than human beings.

As discussed earlier the reflective tapetum and the wider pupil maximise the entry of light in to the eye. As the result the retina gets more light. Since the retina is provided with more rods that are very effective in absorbing the light, the cats are able to see well than human beings in low light.

Stress, Anxiety, and Depression in Cats; the Pee Problem

January 19, 2012 :: Posted by - kittyluver :: Category - Behavior

One may notice the cat peeing in inappropriate places. The reason for this is most cases are stress, depression and anxiety. Let us discuss about the pee problem at length here.

Causes

Stress and the depression are not only seen in human beings but also noticed in cats. The animal in captivity are also very much under stress. The reasons are plenty for the stress and depression.

The cats are depressed more if there is expansion in the family of the pet owner. So many happenings such as the spouse moving in, spouse moving out, new baby coming in, parents common in, parents going out, any new pet arrival etc affect the cat’s mind set. The owners are likely to pay less attention to these lovely animals, which will hurt them very much. The cat slowly slips in to depression.

The stress and depression affect the physical health of the urinary tract, the reason for this still under research stage. This urinary tract disorder in cat is called as feline idiopathic cystitis or feline lower urinary tract disease.

Symptoms

The symptom of the feline idiopathic cystitis are crying while urinating, peeing out side the litter box, blood in urine, excessive licking of private parts, straining while urinating, frequent urination, prolonged urination etc. one can see one symptom or more than one symptom at a time.

Treatment

The affected cat should be treated both medically and socially. The medical treatment includes anti depressant and other supportive therapies. The social treatment includes environmental change, life style change etc.

The short time medical treatment is very common but the environmental enrichment or change is a must. The affected cat should be taken to the vet at the earliest. The vet will rule out the medical and other pathological reasons before attempting the treatment. If the cats are not able to pass urine in total, the vet may conduct a surgery as it is a medical emergency.
