Managing Allergies to Cat’s Body

October 06, 2012 :: Posted by - kittyluver :: Category - Diseases, Health

You may love to have a cat as pet at home. But you may not be able to do so because of your cat allergy issue. Here is good news. The cats and the people who are allergic to it can live together without any hassle.

The allergic reactions to the cat are caused by the protein secretions of the skin of the cat in most cases. The cat’s saliva is the other allergens. These proteins attach themselves to the skin and the hair of the cat and are released in to the environment slowly.

Few are of the opinion that they soon develop immunity to counter cat allergy. This is certainly possible, but one should never depend on this theory so much. The reason is that in some cases the allergic reaction may get worse will repeat exposure.

If you are prone for cat allergy and yet love to have a cat at home, then try for a cat breed with short hair. These breeds will release less hair than the long haired cat breeds. Pure breeds like Devon and Cornish rex can be considered. These breeds do not have few layers of hairs that are commonly seen in other breeds and the allergic reaction may be less. The other breed that one can look for is sphinx which is more or less hairless and these cats love the pet owners very much.

If you have a cat at home follow little suggestion to get away from the cat allergy. The cat’s bed should be washed very frequently. Use fewer carpets in the house as they may harbour more allergens. Better to limit upholstered furniture pieces as much as possible. The cat should never be permitted to allergic person’s bed room. The smooth surfaces of the house should be washed frequently.

Will Dogs and Cats can live in Perfect Harmony in the Home?

February 05, 2012 :: Posted by - kittyluver :: Category - Behavior

There is a very interesting research paper published in Tel Aviv University. The research finding is first of its kind and is a boon to pet lovers. The research finding can be seen d in the journal for applied animal behaviour. There are hardly any research papers on different pets living together without any fuss.

According to Prof Joseph terkel, nearly one third of the Americans want to have pets of two different species but are worried about the trouble that is likely to follow if they do not live in harmony. As per the study, the cats and dogs can live peacefully in a house if there are introduced in right way. Let us discuss about it here. The cats should be adopted first.

The Tel Aviv university researchers have worked on this subject comprehensively. They had conducted interviews with more that 200 pet owners who have both dog and cat in the same house. They had videotaped the pets and had observed the behaviour of those dogs and cats very closely. After so many deliberations they had concluded that the dogs and cats can live in the same house without any trouble if certain conditions are met with.

As per the research finding nearly two third of the owners who had both dog and cat expressed that there is positive relationship between the pets. Nearly 25 % of the pet owners reported that their pets do not fight but at the same time were not close to each other and there was total indifference.

Nearly 10 % of the pet owners reported that there was active fight and enmity between the dog and cat housed together. There are many reasons for the fighting. There inter species signals are different. The dog wags the tail when happy, where as the cat purrs. The averted head signal in cat is aggression and the same signal in dog means submission.

It was observed that in houses where the dogs and cats stay together without any fuss, the cats learn to talk like the dog vice versa. If the following suggestions are followed the cats and dogs can live happily. The cats should be adopted first. The dog should be adopted next. The cats should not be aged more than 6 months and the dog should be below 1 year of age at the time of introduction, which is the key to the success. As they grow together, they get close to each other and one pet can understand the other better and can live in harmony for years.

The importance of annual wellness examination and testing in cats

September 15, 2011 :: Posted by - kittyluver :: Category - Behavior, Home Remedies

The cat owners in general have the habit of taking the pet cat to near by vet clinic only when the cat is sick. This is not all recommended. The cat must be taken to the vet clinic for complete check up at least once in a year for the well being and the longevity of the cat. Annual wellness examination of cat is mandatory for all cats.

As per the research papers submitted in the field of immunology ten years ago, the feline vaccines that are administered annually, can actually be done once in three years, especially for the cats that stay indoors most of the time. The pet owners thought that they can take the cat to the vet clinic once in three years.

As the result so many felines missed the opportunity of getting tested once in a year to find out anomaly, if there are any, at a very early stage. This is a great injustice done to the feline friend by the pet owners. This is like we, the humans going to the clinic once in ten years. Very bad, is it not? On the contrary if you are subjecting your cat annual wellness examination,  then the vet will take the history of the cat from you and will completely check the cats part by part to find out any abnormality.

The veterinarian will like to know from you the cats age, food, breathing, litter box habits, life style, exercise, general health, vaccinations etc. He will also like to know whether the cat stay indoor or out door. The general examination is nothing but the observation of the physical appearance, examination of the chest using stethoscope, specific parts palpitation etc.

The faeces and the urine sample will be examined for colour, consistency etc. The faeces will be examined for finding out the parasite infestation. At times the feline heart worm test may also be conducted by the vet. As soon the cat attains 7-8 years of age, which is generally called as middle age for the cat, the chances of developing serious health problem increases.

The most common health problems that one can expect at this age are hypertension, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, heart disease etc. At this age during the physical examination the vet will test the complete blood count, biochemistry profile, analysis of urine and thyroid test. This way one can find out the diseases at a very early stage so that the treatment or prevention is very easy. But once the disease sets in, and then the treatment is difficult and costly.

One can avoid this danger by annual wellness examination and testing. In case, the test conducted reveals any medical problem, the cat should be subjected to re-examination to confirm the result before attempting the treatment. Once the test result is re confirmed the treatment needs to be started at once to prevent the health issue reaching the advanced stage.

If required the feline friend should be admitted in the hospital for further treatment. This way the annual wellness examination and testing is very good for the cats and such examination saves the life of many more cats every year.

Effective Heartworm Medication For Cat

April 15, 2009 :: Posted by - kittyluver :: Category - Diseases

Heartworm medication is in general referred as HWP by most of the veterinarians in the abbreviated form. The same can also be termed as heartworm prevention. The consultation with the experienced vet is the best way to counter heartworm infection.

Heartworm infection of your lovely pet cat depends on lifestyle of the pet as well as the region in which they are domesticated. The above mentioned factors and the general health and immune level of the cat will be considered by the vet in prescribing the product selection to counter and treat the infection

There are many safe and best medications are available in plenty in the vet medication market. The selection of medicine is of course the sole discretion of the vet. There are certain features that need to be considered while prescribing the heartworm medication of the cat.

The vet will consider the following points before prescribing the same:

Whether the medication is approved by the BVM or not?  The size of the dog, the dosage of the medicine, the effects and the side effects of the medicine, the presentation of the drug, the ingredients, the price of the medicine, the guarantee and the administration route and the duration of the drug.

In principle, the medicine selected by the vet should be effective, easy to administer, less frequent administration and should have less side effects.

Most of all, the medicine must cost effective. The dosage will be of course decided by the vet depending on the size, more appropriately the weight of the pet.  Using the drug that performs more that one function, such as preventing the worms as well as removing the root cause of the problem by killing the fleas from which the worms originate.

Likewise some pet owner may prefer pills instead of topical applications and vice versa. The owner has the liberty to express his liking in selecting the route of drug administration.

The pet owners do need to buy the medication recommended by the vet. In case of non-availablity, the vet needs to be consulted for alternate medicine instead of making his own choice or leaving it to the drug shop employee’s whims and fancies. The dosage and the duration should be in line with the vet’s advice without any deviation.

When To Adopt a New Kitten?

November 15, 2008 :: Posted by - kittyluver :: Category - Behavior, Uncategorized

Most of the pet owners are really confused when to adopt a new kitten. It is not advisable to adopt a kitten before 12 weeks of age. You may ask why you the kitten should not be separated from its mother. The main reason is that kittens need time to develop socialization with its mother and other siblings.

In addition to this, cat breeders are also not inclined to sell the kittens before 12 weeks old. They will finish off the initial work for their kittens. The initial work includes early trip to vet’s clinic, performing different hands-on exercises to prepare them for their eventual home, and  to begin the kittens’ immunization series.

Preliminary arrangement should be made before bringing a cat to your home. You should educate your family about the cat maintainence.
